What changed for 2026

Based on the College Board CED (Effective Fall 2025)

Exam structure

Multiple Choice

40 → 42 questions, now with 4 answer choices (A–D) instead of 5. Still 90 minutes, 55% of score.

Free Response

Still 4 questions at 90 minutes (45% of score), but the internal structure changed:

Q1 Methods & Control Structures 7 pts Was 3 parts (9 pts) → now 2 parts. Part A: iteration/conditionals. Part B: String methods.

Q2 Class Design 7 pts Unchanged — write a complete class.

Q3 Data Analysis with ArrayList 5 pts Was 2 parts → now a single method. Renamed from "Array/ArrayList."

Q4 2D Array 6 pts Was 2 parts → now a single method.

Course units (reorganized)

The old 10-unit structure collapsed into 4 larger units:

File I/O — Scanner and File classes for reading text files
String parsing — String.split() for delimited data

The Java Quick Reference now includes File, Scanner (nextInt, nextDouble, nextBoolean, nextLine, next, hasNext, close).

What stayed the same

Total exam time (3 hours), two-section structure (MCQ → break → FRQ), the 1–5 scoring scale, and core Java content: arrays, ArrayLists, 2D arrays, recursion, sorting, searching, and OOP fundamentals.
